The succulent, seasoned perfection of Honey Baked turkey makes it a coveted centerpiece for holidays, parties, and family meals. But leftovers are inevitable, which begs the question – how long does Honey Baked turkey last in the refrigerator? Proper storage is key to extending the shelf life of this deli delight. Follow these tips to keep Honey Baked turkey fresh and delicious for as long as possible.
The Importance of Prompt Refrigeration
The number one rule when storing any perishable food like Honey Baked turkey is to refrigerate it as soon as possible after purchase or delivery. Leaving the turkey out for over 2 hours allows bacteria to multiply rapidly and shortens its shelf life. Refrigerate immediately, or keep cold during transit in an insulated bag with ice packs. Then store in the fridge without delay when you arrive home.
Optimal Fridge Temperature
Keep refrigerator temperature at 40°F or below. The colder the better for slowing bacteria growth. Make sure to use an appliance thermometer, as refrigerator temps can fluctuate. Avoid storing the turkey on the top shelf or door, the warmest areas. The bottom shelf or meat drawer work best.
Storage Duration Depends on Bone-In or Boneless
The fridge life of Honey Baked turkey depends whether it is bone-in or boneless:
- Bone-in turkey lasts 5-7 days
- Boneless turkey lasts 3-5 days
These timeframes are for refrigerator storage after the turkey is cooked. The sooner you eat it, the better the quality.
Proper Storage Containers Are Key
Always store Honey Baked turkey in an airtight container, or wrap tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This prevents moisture loss and keeps out contaminants. The original packaging works too if intact. Glass or plastic containers with tight lids are ideal.
Monitor for Signs of Spoilage
Check the turkey daily and watch for these signs of spoilage:
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Grayish color
- Unpleasant sour odor
- Mold growth
If you notice any of these, discard the turkey immediately even if within the timeframe above. Safety comes first with deli meats.
Avoid Cross-Contamination
Never allow raw meat juices or other liquids to contact the turkey during storage. Keep the turkey separated from other foods in sealable containers to avoid cross-contamination.
Freezing Extends Shelf Life Significantly
For maximum fridge life, freeze Honey Baked turkey immediately if you don’t plan to eat it within 3-4 days. It will keep safely frozen for 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before using
Reheating and Food Safety Tips
- Discard turkey if left out over 2 hours after cooking.
- Reheat to 165°F. Microwave works best to prevent drying out.
- Do not refreeze previously frozen turkey once thawed.
- Do not keep reheated leftovers over 3-4 days.

Re: How far in advance can I buy a Honey Ham?
@SoonerI dont know your answer, but if they come vacuum packed, you can do it now for sure.
But I don’t know how to freeze ham. If it were any other meat, I wouldn’t wait five days to freeze it. When I know for sure I’m going to freeze some, I freeze a chunk as soon as I can. The idea behind this is that the fresher it is when I take it out to use it, the better it will be.
Hopefully someone way more knowledeable about ham will answer you soon.
Marry Christmas in the meantime.
