As the holiday season approaches, many people look for opportunities to get active and burn some calories before indulging in all the delicious food. That’s where El Paso’s annual YMCA Turkey Trot comes in! This family-friendly 5K run/walk takes place every Thanksgiving morning, providing a feel-good way to kick off the holiday.
In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about El Paso’s Turkey Trot run/walk, including the history, course details, registration info, and tips for making the most of this fun community event
A Longstanding El Paso Tradition
The YMCA Turkey Trot is one of El Paso’s longest running traditions with the first race taking place in 1977. This year marks the 48th annual event showing its staying power as a beloved community event.
Rain or shine, hundreds of locals and visitors gather Thanksgiving morning to trot through the streets and parks near downtown El Paso. The scenic course, festive costumes, live music, and holiday cheer create an unforgettable atmosphere.
All proceeds go to the YMCA of El Paso, supporting their programs that strengthen community health. So by participating in the Trot, you’re also doing good!
The Nitty Gritty Details of the 5K Course
The Turkey Trot 5K course starts and finishes at the corner of Virginia Street and Montana Avenue, near the El Paso Community Foundation.
The certified 5K (3.1 mile) route follows a simple out-and-back course. Runners head east on Montana before turning north on Ochoa Street. After a quick jog through San Jacinto Plaza, participants turn back west to finish where they started.
The course provides a perfect combination of urban sights and greenery. Highlights along the way include historic buildings, the El Paso Public Library, San Jacinto Plaza, and the Union Plaza District.
The route is stroller and wheelchair accessible, making this 5K suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Costumed trotters and creative strollers are welcome!
Registration Options for All Levels of Commitment
The YMCA Turkey Trot offers registration options whether you’re a serious runner or just seeking some gentle exercise before the big meal.
The main 5K run/walk costs $49 if you register by November 17th. Prices increase closer to race day, so sign up early for the best rate.
For those who want to sleep in on Thanksgiving morning, the “Turkey Trot Sleep In” option costs $35. You’ll receive a medal, bib number, and other goodies without having to leave your pajamas!
If your household is divided between runners and non-runners, the “Double Feather Dash” registration nets two entries for $100 total.
Online registration closes on November 27th, but you can still sign up in-person until race morning.
Tips for Crushing Your 5K
If you plan to tackle the full 5K run, keep these tips in mind:
-
Get in a few short training runs in the weeks prior. Even a couple 1-2 mile runs will help prep your body.
-
Do some dynamic stretching before the race to loosen up. Save static stretching for post-race.
-
Start slow and conserve energy in the first mile before picking up the pace.
-
Bring a small water bottle to stay hydrated along the course.
-
Enjoy every minute! Soak up the awesome race day vibes.
-
Cool down with a 5-10 minute easy jog and some stretching after you cross the finish.
No matter your pace or finish time, be proud of putting in the effort. Enjoy a sense of accomplishment along with your pumpkin pie!
Making Memories with Friends and Family
One of the best parts of the YMCA Turkey Trot is the opportunity to create memories and traditions with loved ones. Gathering for a Thanksgiving morning run or walk is quality bonding time.
Encourage new runners by tackling the 5K as a family. Let the kids dress up in turkey costumes or create unique strollers. Take goofy selfies along the course. And be sure to capture finisher photos in front of the race banner.
Many local running groups also attend the Trot together decked out in colorful matching shirts. Feel the team spirit as you trot down Montana Avenue pursued by the 4:30 Bunny!
The post-race festivities include live music, refreshments, and awards ceremonies. Stick around to keep the holiday vibes going.
