Understanding Weight Watchers Points
First, let’s quickly review how the Weight Watchers points system works.
-
Every food and drink is assigned a SmartPoints value based on its calories, fat, carbs, protein and fiber.
-
You get a personalized daily SmartPoints budget to spend however you want. The average is around 30 points per day.
-
Fruits, veggies and lean proteins are lower in points. High fat and sugary foods are higher.
-
Tracking points encourages mindfulness about what you eat.
Now let’s see how delicious pulled pork fits into the plan.
How Many Points Per Serving of Pulled Pork?
The number of points for pulled pork depends on a few key factors:
Portion Size
- A 3 oz serving of pulled pork is around 4 points
- 4 oz jumps to 6 points
- A sandwich with 5-6 oz pork will be 7-9 points
So the points climb quickly with larger portions. Watch your serving sizes.
Cooking Method
- Pulled pork that’s oven roasted or smoked tends to be 4-5 points for 3 oz.
- Pork cooked in lots of oil or lard can be 6 points or more.
- Frying and breading also drives up the points.
Stick to dry rubs and lean cooking methods when possible.
Additions and Condiments
- Plain pulled pork is lowest in points
- BBQ sauce adds about 1 point per tablespoon
- Buns range from 2 points for light wheat to 4 for brioche.
- Toppings like cheese and bacon can add 2+ points each.
Use lighter sauces and low-point accompaniments to keep the total down.
Calculating Points for Any Pulled Pork Recipe
To get exact points, you’ll need to look at the complete nutrition facts for your recipe. But here’s a simple formula you can use to get a rough estimate:
- Take the total raw weight of pork used
- Multiply by 50% since it loses weight when cooked
- Divide by serving size (e.g. 4 oz) to get servings
- Multiply servings by 4 points each for a basic value
- Adjust up or down based on cooking method, sauce, etc.
Let’s walk through an example:
- 3 lbs raw pork shoulder
- After cooking, around 1.5 lbs remain
- Divided into 4 oz servings = 6 servings
- 6 x 4 points per serving = 24 points
- Add 2 points for barbecue sauce = 26 points total
So this 3 lb batch makes about 6 servings at 4-5 points each. You can estimate like this for any recipe!
Tips for Enjoying Pulled Pork on Weight Watchers

-
Pile it on top of salads or stuff into bell peppers for a lighter meal.
-
Make pulled pork the star and limit other high-point ingredients.
-
Focus your remaining daily points on fruits, veggies and zero point foods.
