Demystifying Oyster Portion Sizes: How Many Oysters Are in 16 Ounces?

Oysters are one of the most popular mollusks around. Their briny mineral-rich taste makes them a delicacy unlike any other shellfish. While oysters are often served by the piece they are also sold shucked in volumes like pints, ounces, and pounds. This can make it tricky to visualize just how many oysters you’re getting. So if you’ve ever wondered, “How many oysters are in 16 ounces?” read on for the full breakdown.

A Brief Background on Oyster Sizing

Oysters can vary dramatically in shape and size depending on the species. East Coast oysters like Blue Points and Wellfleets tend to be smaller, while West Coast oysters like Kumamotos and Pacifics are larger. Size also depends on the oyster’s growth conditions and age at harvest.

When sold in-shell, oysters are categorized into general size grades:

  • Petite or Mini (2-2.5 inches)
  • Small (2.5-3 inches)
  • Medium (3-4 inches)
  • Large (4-5 inches)
  • Jumbo (5+ inches)

For shucked meats, sizing gets a bit more complex Volume measures like pints and ounces give a better sense of quantity than individual piece counts Let’s look at what different sizes mean in a 16-ounce portion.

Estimating Oyster Counts in 16 Ounces

If you buy a 16-ounce container of shucked oyster meats, here’s a general estimate of how many pieces you’ll get:

  • X-Small oysters = ~64 per 16 oz
  • Small oysters = ~50 per 16 oz
  • Medium oysters = ~40 per 16 oz
  • Large oysters = ~32 per 16 oz
  • X-Large oysters = ~25 per 16 oz

So for medium-sized oysters, the typical go-to size, you can expect around 40 shucked oyster meats. Keep in mind that the exact count may vary based on moisture content and shell thickness.

Let’s compare 16 ounces to some other common oyster volumes:

  • Pint (16 oz) = 40 medium oysters
  • Half-gallon (64 oz) = 160 medium oysters
  • Gallon (128 oz) = 320 medium oysters

As you can see, you get quite a jump in quantity when going from a pint to a half-gallon or gallon.

Oyster Serving Sizes and Nutrition

To put these oyster amounts into perspective, let’s look at typical oyster serving sizes and nutrition profiles:

  • A standard 3-ounce serving of shucked oysters contains around 7-9g of protein.

  • A 1-pound bag of shucked oysters contains about 8-12 servings.

  • A 16-ounce pint provides around 4 servings of oysters.

  • A half-gallon offers approximately 16 one-ounce servings.

In terms of nutritional value, oysters are low in fat, carbs, and calories. A 3-ounce portion contains around 100 calories and 10g of protein. Oysters offer high amounts of zinc, selenium, vitamin B12, copper, and iron.

Comparing In-Shell vs Shucked Pricing

When served in-shell, oysters are usually priced by the piece instead of weight. Depending on quality and scarcity, expect to pay:

  • $0.50 – $1 per small oyster
  • $1.50 – $2.50+ per large oyster

For shucked meats, bulk pricing typically breaks down as:

  • $12 – $15 per pint
  • $20 – $30 per pound
  • $60 – $90+ per gallon

Keep in mind that shucked oysters involve labor costs for shelling, so the pricing is higher than in-shell per piece.

Shucked Oyster Selection, Storage and Serving

When buying shucked oysters, look for plump, uniform meats with clear liquid. Avoid any with creamy or milky liquid indicating spoilage.

Store shucked oysters for 2-3 weeks max at below 40°F. Thaw frozen oysters overnight in the fridge before using.

Most shucked oysters are sold pre-washed, but taste best with a final rinse. Serve chilled on crushed ice with lemon wedges, cocktail sauce, and other accoutrements.

I ordered two pints of the shucked oysters and received them quickly, safely and exquisite!!! Personally, I’m not an oyster person, but my family LOVES them! I served them fried in butter with a French bread crumb coating. My peeps enjoyed them for Mardi Gras appetizer, right before our mini seafood boil. One pint contained 14 small oysters, which was the PERFECT size for easy frying and eating. Even our Little 5 year old loved them! I will order more very shortly!!! Thank you Cajun Grocer!!
