The Braces and Bacon Debate: Can You Enjoy Crispy Bacon With Orthodontics?
As someone who recently got braces, I was worried I’d have to say goodbye to enjoying crispy, savory bacon every morning. Bacon has always been one of my favorite breakfast foods, and the thought of not being able to crunch into those salty strips saddened me. But is bacon really off the table when you have braces?
In this article we’ll explore whether you can eat bacon with braces the potential risks, tips for enjoying it safely, and some healthier bacon alternatives. As a foodie on an orthodontic journey myself, I’ve done lots of trial and error with bacon over the past few months. Read on for the results of my tasty experiments!
Should You Avoid Bacon With Braces?
So what’s the official verdict – is bacon banned on a braces diet? Many orthodontists recommend caution with very hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy foods that could damage braces Bacon certainly falls into the hard and sticky categories when it’s cooked crispy.
Potential risks of eating crunchy bacon with braces:
-
Bacon could get stuck in braces, requiring picking it out.
-
It may bend or break wires.
-
The hard texture may pop brackets off teeth.
-
Crunching carries risk of irritation or cuts to cheeks/lips.
For these reasons, orthodontists typically recommend avoiding chewing or biting down directly on hard foods like raw veggies, nuts, seeds, popcorn kernels, hard breads, and yes – crispy bacon.
So while you can probably get away with an occasional crunch of bacon, eating it regularly or chomping big mouthfuls directly risks damaging your braces. But all hope for enjoying bacon isn’t lost, as we’ll explore next!
Tips for Safely Eating Bacon With Braces
While crispy bacon carries some risks, you need not cut it out completely while wearing braces. With some small tweaks to preparation and eating method, you can still enjoy the salty, smoky flavor fairly safely during treatment. Here are my tips:
-
Opt for turkey bacon or leaner center-cut pork bacon to reduce fat.
-
Cook bacon to a bendable texture – browned but not super crisp.
-
Cut bacon into smaller pieces to minimize need for chomping.
-
Avoid bunching up large mouthfuls of bacon when chewing.
-
Cut any sandwiches or burgers to make biting easier.
-
Follow up meals by swishing water and brushing gently.
-
Visit your orthodontist promptly if anything comes loose or poking.
I’ve found slightly undercooking the bacon leaves it pliable but cooked through, so I can tear pieces off with my fingers or teeth vs. having to bite through it. Smaller pieces are also easier to gently chew towards the back molars vs. hard front biting.
Bacon Alternatives to Consider With Braces
If you find even softer bacon too risky, these tasty alternatives can satisfy your cravings:
-
Turkey or beef bacon jerky for a chewy texture.
-
Bacon crumbles on salads or potatoes.
-
Candied bacon – cooked low and slow until caramelized.
-
Bacon salt seasoning on eggs, veggies, popcorn.
-
Bacon flavored nuts or sunflower seeds for snacking.
-
Bacon ranch dressing drizzle on wraps or tacos.
-
Bacon fat for cooking other foods like Brussels sprouts.
With some creative use of bacon flavor in dressings, seasonings and toppings, you can still enjoy the taste without chewing the hard strips.
My Verdict: Occasional Soft Bacon Is Okay
After months of braces, I personally still eat the occasional piece of bacon. But I prepare it differently than I used to. I cook it a bit less to maintain a tender texture, and cut it into small bits to pop in my mouth versus biting off chunks. I also limit myself to just 1-2 pieces at a time, versus piling my plate high.
While it may not be quite as satisfying as a big crunchy mouthful of super crispy bacon, a few bites with a softer texture seems to pose minimal risk. It allows me to get my savory bacon fix during braces treatment. But for regular consumption, switching to an alternate form like jerky or crumbles may be safer.
The most important thing is paying attention to your mouth’s signals. If any particular food causes soreness, irritation or damage, avoid that item. We each respond differently to orthodontic treatment – your comfort level may allow more or less bacon than mine.
Does Bacon Ever Need to Be Fully Off Limits?
For most people, an occasional piece of softened bacon is acceptable during braces treatment. But there are a few situations where you may need to fully avoid all forms of bacon:
-
If your orthodontist says no due to very high risk of damage.
-
If you have口a nickel allergy – discuss metal content in bacon with your doctor.
-
If you follow dietary restrictions like kosher, halal, vegetarian or vegan.
-
If you have religious, ethical or personal reasons for abstaining from pork.
For anyone in these groups, bacon substitution would be recommended over trying to make accommodations. But for most bacon lovers wearing braces, small tweaks can mean enjoying it in moderation.
The Bottom Line on Bacon and Braces
While you may need to avoid regularly crunching on big piles of crispy bacon, removing it fully from your braces diet is likely unnecessary. With some simple preparation adjustments and wise eating habits, you can likely indulge your bacon cravings occasionally. Pay attention to your individual tolerance, stick to softer textures, cut pieces small, and limit portions.
But if bacon poses a high risk of damage to your particular braces setup, follow your orthodontist’s advice. And consider exploring alternate ways to infuse the bacony flavor you crave into other dishes. With some creativity and care, you can find a way to safely satisfy your bacon love while wearing braces.

What is a proven effective back brace?
Those who are suffering from sciatica or disc prolapse in the back area are advised to wear back braces. They help to keep one active and healthy. Though it is not a cure, it decreases back pain and prevents spinal deformity progression. An effective back brace should be washable, so one can keep it clean as it’s worn regularly. Sizing and adjustability is also very important. Mobility should be good in braces and shouldn’t cause undue pressure.
